A microbe which infests 85% of humans at birth has been implicated as a possible prime cause of obesity, according to researchers at Washington University.
The microbe, Methanobrevibacter smithii (M smithii to the average lay person)
"works by removing waste products released by other microbes. By clearing the waste products, it helps other gut bacteria to digest some of the more fibrous components of food and turn them into calories and other materials which can lead to weight gain. Without the M smithii bug, waste accumulates and blocks the activity of other gut bacteria, inhibiting the absorption of calories.
"The discovery could explain why people process calories in different ways based on the individual mix of microbes in their gut. "

All this "its not just twinkies and doughnuts" information - strange that a little time with a browser teachs so much but the mainstream media buriesit on page 28 (if it gets printed at all)!
