So, I had a crazy idea last night. As some of you know, I'm a little nutty about the song lyrics. It's a shame that I can't actually post the songs themselves instead of just the lyrics, since it's the totality of the song that inspires me, not just the lyrics. So, I was thinking it might be fun if we set up something similar to the card exchanges, at least here in the clubhouse.
What I'm thinking is this: If you have a mix CD you think we'd like, post the tracks here, and offer to mail the CD to anyone who sends you their address. You could also stipulate that you want to trade-in other words, if you send out a CD to someone, you'd like to receive one from them in exchange. You don't have to do this, but it is one option to consider.
I don't know if anyone else will like this idea, but I figured I'd give it a shot. I have a friend who occasionally send me mix CDs, and they're always excellent, and often times includes songs I've never heard of but really love, so it is also a great way to find out about music you'll love that you might not otherwise know about.
OK, here's my mix CD track list. I put it together last summer/spring, and it reflected a lot of what I was feeling then, and still seems to be where I'm at in my head, so I still listen to it a lot. I'm willing to send it to anyone who wants it, just PM me your address.
1) Patty Griffin "Truth No. 2"
You may be familiar with the Dixie Chicks cover of this song, but it's a PG original, and this version was recorded live in the KGSR studios in Austin, TX.
2) Dar Williams "What Do You Hear In These Sounds"
This song is all about therapy, and is clever, as many of DW's songs are.
3) REM "Hairshirt"
Has a lovely mandolin in it
4) Pixies "Gouge Away"
When I'm agitated, I like some of the lines in this song
5) Sufjan Stevens "John Wayne Gacy, JR."
Can a song be both beautiful and chilling? This song can.
6) Mary Chapin Carpenter "Jubilee"
Great song, see the 'letters' thread for the lyrics
7) Dixie Chicks "Taking the Long Way"
Their last CD was fantastic, from beginning to end, but this song speaks to me more than any of the others on that CD.
8) Cassandra Wilson "Come On In My Kitchen"
It's a Robert Johnson cover, and the mix of Wilson's vocals and the bass in this song is very sexy, me thinks.
9) The The "This is the Day"
Wish the M&M/Mars folks hadn't appropriated this song for their commercials, but oh well, it's still a wonderful slice of late 80's synth gloriousness.
10) Roseanne Cash (w/Steve Earle) "I'll Change For You"
True confession: this song reminds me of someone I was briefly infatuated with, and I was seriously thinking about dropping out of school and moving halfway across the country to be with them.
11) Alison Krauss "Forget About It"
Yes, her voice is astonishing, and this song can make me cry. All about the kiss off to the ex.
12) Sarah Harmer "Uniform Grey"
Nice little folkish song. Has a great refrain about "I haven't been through all that you've been through, you can use that as an excuse"
13) Aimee Mann "Save Me"
the queen of the fucked up love song. And this is supreme, and I think this is the one she got nominated for an Oscar for.
14) Crowded House "Fall At You Feet"
Oh, what a painful love song. If you've ever been fully vulnerable with your 'slow turning pain' with another, then you'll get this song.
15) Crowded House "Into Temptation"
This is a good companion to the previous song, about the things we want but know they are awful to want.
16) Crowded House "Private Universe"
There's something very cinematic about this song, and has some great polyrhythmic drumming in it.
17) Crowded House "It's Only Natural"
a nice upbeat love song, with one of my favorite lines: "Read me like a book that's fallen between your knees, please, let me have my way with you"
18) Sam Philips "Entertainment"
I've always liked her quirky songs, and who wouldn't like the music of a former Christian pop singer who was married to T-Bone Burnett for many years?
19) Dar Williams "Another Mystery"
I ended up putting this song on because I liked the theme of the song, and it is very jaunty with a nice banjo on it. It's a 'fun' feminist song about objectification, I think.
So, we'll see what happens with this experiment of mine.
