Does anyone know why this force exerts such a powerful influence over the human soul?

It seems particularly relevant over the internet, and especially on art sites. A person will go up to a gallery by the user "Draws fat girls" with plenty of thumbnails depicting people in states of dire adiposity, and then post such comments as "eeww, fatties" or "holy crap, why is she so fat?"

What compells me to browse subjects that are repulsive or unpleasant to me? When I see a title that says something like "Illinois judge gives high-five to baby rapist" in Hyde Park, why do I click? Why do I ever read a thread in the flaming zone of Pawg? For that matter, why do I read threads in Pawg which are not stories written by Andrew, Carnestrange, or Matt?

Why do people passing car crashes slow down for a look?

Why Ann Coulter? (Not why she is anything, just why she is)

I submit these questions to you.
