While working on a project featuring old New York recipes, I came across this tidbit:
It is said that Diamond Jim Brady, a Delmonicos regular, would begin every meal with dozens of raw oysters. Perhaps this was to fuel his ardor for Lillian Russell, the glamorous actress and singer who was his companion for over forty years. There were, however, many who noted that Bradys appetite could not compare with that of the beauteous Russell, who it was said could eat like a stevedore. She was known to eat four or five dozen oysters while sipping her ever-present champagne.
