Gang--I'm a St. Jude Partner in Hope (which my friends seem to think is a cult!--it's just the montly donor program for St. Jude's hosp. for childhood cancer in TN) and I get the newsletter. There's always interesting stuff in there.
So this issue has an article on obesity.
the title: The Weight Trait: Are you fated to be fat? The loss of one gene may tip the scales toward obesity.
A gene known as Prox1 could be the culprit for one type of obesity. Or rather, the lack of the gene, the article says. When one copy of the gene is missing, the lymphatic system goes wonky. Lymph can leak out of vessels and fat cells nearby--usually in the abdomen--become enlarged, garnering extra fatty acids provided by the lymph.
The article also says that the advie to eat less, hit the gym, etc. is still good advice, but that at least some cases of adult-onset obesity may not be caused solely by overeating, etc.
Wanted to pass that along.
