I so cannot believe this organization I used to foster cats for. I have spent a great deal of money out of pocket paying for medical expenses for these cats with the understanding that I would be reimbursed. We are talking several thousands, not tens of thousands, of $$$ so I guess it could be worse, but it is a lot of money to me.
I signed a foster agreement indicating that I was only responsible for food and litter. All of a sudden apparently they have changed the foster agreement to indicate that I'm responsible for "food, shelter, litter, basic vet care, and intake processing." I haven't even seen a copy of this document!
I'm guessing that they are going to try to use this as an excuse to not pay me the back money owed me.

This is luck of the draw - why you should not take unmarketable or marginally
marketable kittens. It is hard, the choice between taking and not taking. We have
to assume they will get picked up by some other group or adopter or lose our minds.
Even then, for one reason or another, maybe it had an URI or got RW while waiting
for an adopter - and you are now stuck with a juvenile which you see will soon be an adult.
The new Foster agreement states that your obligation is limited to TLC, food, shelter, litter,
basic vet care (BASIC), and intake processing. You are entitled to reimbursement for
intake processing. If someone decides to spend $800 on a Tabby kitten, that is then
their decision and their obligation. If we reimburse all expenses, we have to get all receipts
directly AND estimates ahead of time and make approvals to go to the vet. This could take
valuable time away from a sick kitty, but there is no other alternative.
VA and CA and others around the country do it this way - you apply for permission to take
your kitty to the vet beyond intake processing, if you get it, it will be either directly paid or
reimbursed upon receipt of proof of expenditures.
There is not a purrfect solution for this problem - not in the last 75 years! Just now that we
have large groups rescuing, it becomes more incumbent on the business to raise the funds
to reimburse the basic and intake expenses. That is where we want to get to - reimbursing the
rescue (basic) and intake (shots, tests, surgery, etc) so the foster is providing TLC, shelter,
food and litter. But if major medical emergencies occur, they will always have to be referred
for approval by the Board or Business Manager before they are reimbursed.
It is volunteering and it is charity that our people do. If someone is not prepared to do it, they
should not volunteer.
