G'day Folks,
I am not sure if this topic has been brought before.
I had an experience that shocked, yes shocked me to the point that I need to share it with you. A few months ago I expressed interest in someone I thought was very handsome person on a dating chatline. Last week we were chatting a fair bit & he expressed interest in spending some time with me. This meant he had to travel from another country to see me in Australia. Naturally, I thought wow what an effort to travel over international borders to meet.
That feeling did not last long because he asked for me to pay some of the airfare for him. Alarm bells went off at this stage. Then some things he was telling me were starting to not add up. Like his profile picture did not look like picture he was sharing with me. Very close mind you. Also he said he was an contruction engineer. At this stage I asked him to call me on my cell. He did but the line was very static. He gave me a nbr to call him on. Not surprised anymore, the number he gave me was not correct. We finally spoke & his accent was bizzare. Definately did not sound like from where he said he was from.
I questioned him heavily for over another hour. During this time he continued to ask for money. He also sent more pictures and this was his complete undoing. He sent me a picture of himself (and he stated that it was on a buliding site in a country that is in the desert). Now, in the background of this picture there were snow capped mountains. Snow capped mountains in a country in the middle of the desert!
I recovered quickly from the experience and I was glad I listened to my instincts. But I am astounded at how this may have got out of hand because he continued to ask/beg for the money and kept reducing the amount he was asking for. (gotcha mate, now I'm gonna eat ya)
So to all beware and if it sounds to good to be true ask the question why.
Incidentally, I attempted to report his "abuse" to the adminstrators of the chatline and he has switched his profile off.
If you have a story to tell please tell it.
Take care & remember to smile like you mean it.
Helena
