The great white north, eh?
I know that those of us in the capitol area tend to stick to ourselves for the most part, or it certainly seems that way. I know I appreciate my anonymity here, and I get the feeling that others do to some extent too. Still, there have been several posters from this area—mostly FA I admit--and it would be cool to make some sort of contact at least once.

So it is winter time, and what is more ‘Ottawa’ in the winter than to get out on the canal? Now I know that skating is not for everyone, and in particular bigger folk may have trouble with finding skates that fit, being able to bend over sharply enough to tie up skates, and possibly balance (?). But these days they keep a ‘walking track’ of packed snow along one side of the skate way, so that even those who don’t skate can get out on the canal.

So I was wondering if anyone would be interested in meeting for a skate and/or walk one evening? I was thinking meet up at possibly Dow’s lake (it could be downtown) around 8:30, then as a group go to at least the first shacks for beavertails (would have to check until what time the concessions were open). Those who wanted a longer skate could then carry on and others could go back.

Part of meeting on the canal is of course that everyone is bundled up in coats and hats and so on, so people would only marginally get to know how you looked—the odds of them accosting you on Elgin street next summer would be low. Doing it at night helps that too. Also doing a weekday evening means that the crowds are less, so the odds of your next door neighbour coming along and asking who you are with is lower. In other words, even for shy and nervous Ottawans the risk of being accidentally outed is small. On the plus side, I think it would be cool to see that those other FA out there are real—and if any BBW/BHM come (OK, some of the FA area also smallish BHM already) it would be good to get a few more big folk out on the canal, I’m tired of seeing all the grey hounds!

So, anyone interested? The way that this winter has gone, we’d have to do this fairly quickly!

Regards;

-Ed
