I put this in the lounge because its "off topic." I'm just having one of those parental moments this morning where I'm exhausted, frustrated, feel like I'm going crazy....and wouldn't change a thing even if I could.
For those who don't know, I'm a stay-at-home dad.
<sighs....shoulders slump forward>
How do we do it?
I've had one of those mornings, with 20 minute sagas over putting on socks and teeth brushing. Most people don't realize putting on socks and brushing teeth can take almost 40 minutes.
I have 3 year old and 5 year old daughters. My 3 year old has a will like mine. The older's former preschool teacher called 3-4 years old "the first adolescence." So right. My 3 year old wants to do things her way....always....and all her feelings all come in adult sizes. It's like she gets supersized doses of emotions: embarrassment, sadness, frustration, and....in her moments...joy. She cries like a 2 year old whenever she's in trouble; she shows flashes of 8 year old in moments of judgment, verbal skills, and wit; in the next breath, she makes demands like a toddler crossed with an Kamodo dragon and the old lady from Hallmark's Shoebox Greetings. It can wear me out.
This is most days:
"Daddy? Will you give me breakfast?"
"Daddy? I'm thristy."
"Daddy? Can I have a brownie?"
"Daddy? Can I watch a movie?"
"Daddy? Can we go to the park?"
"Daddy? I wanna cheeze samwich."
"Daddy? Can I have a pen?"
"Daddy?.....
"Daddy?.....
"Daddy?.....
Then...out of nowhere, I watch them dance wherever they go....or, one of them will start singing some impromptu song in the cutest voice.....and, I wonder what life was about before I had them.
Life's peaks and valleys, it seems, all in the same moments......\
<takes a breath>
Time to walk to school.
