I believe the Pure Style modesty Fashion guidelines for pre-teen and teen girls has its roots in the more conservative Christian denominations. Today I listened to a radio segment about the Pure Style movement. If I remember correctly, the Catholic Church was the host of a fashion show and series of seminars for young women (10 to 16 years old) promoting modesty dressing.

Here is the link to the Pure Style web page: http://www.sexrespect.com/modesty.html

The gist of the message I understood from the Pure Style movement was that it was the responsibility of the women to insure that the men they interact with are not aroused sexually by the clothes these women wear. The women are to dress modestly so as not to unduly arouse men. Some of the rules seem crazy. This group implies that if a man is aroused sexually it is the woman's fault. This is crazy. If most men are similar to me, a beautiful woman could be wearing a potato sack and I would still be aroused by the sight of a beautiful woman.

On the positive side, this group does have a point that some fashion is far too sexy and inappropriate for the age group targeted. Not only is fashion which is inappropriate being marketed to pre-teens and teens. Sexy clothing is being marketed to girls as young as seven.

The pink cotton T-shirt hangs from the "Sale" rack at the front of the shop. Its logo, in red lettering, stretches from left to right: "So many boys, so little time." It's an old line, which usually raises a smile. But not this time: this T-shirt is a "5-6 years" size. Inappropriate? Well, yes. But everything is relative. What about the thong for seven-year-olds, with a little heart on the crotch? Or the padded bra for a nine-year-old? As for America - you can buy your prepubescent daughter a thong with a cherry and the words "Eat Me" embroidered across it.
