I finally found an underwire tankini I love. Love the color, the cup wires are big enough, etc. Only problem is the largest size is a 24 and I'm nowhere near a 24. I bought one anyway just to check it out, and I have an idea: I want to add panels to each side to make it larger. I can easily get swimsuit fabric that blends so that the panels will just look like a design element in the suit. I thought maybe the cups would be spaced too narrowly, but I held it up to my front and it works.

Before I spend the money on extra fabric and open up the seams (making the suit nonreturnable), can any of you think of a reason this wouldn't work?

Also, since I'd just be sewing two vertical seams on both sides, do you think I could sew it on just a regular sewing machine? I don't have a serger so there will be no vertical stretch to the seams when I'm done. Think that's a problem? I guess I could take it to a tailor with a serger if necessary, but I'd prefer not to.
