Deficits are a great reason to say no. And we all know how much Republicans like saying no.
-- More resources for schools and colleges -- a worthy cause, we'd love to help, but that darn deficit don't you know;
-- Better safer roads, bridges, trains ... -- as soon as we get this pesky deficit under control we'll get right on it;
-- A cleaner environment, safe drinking water, clear air ... -- of course we care, but with the deficit now's not really the time;
-- Protect consumers from predatory lending institution -- now's not the time to burden business, maybe after we handle the deficit;
.... (add just about any positive government action to the list)
But of course we always have money for war.
