I bought my first computer, a Mac Performa, in 1996.

It lasted 6 years with no trouble. I backed up my files--photos, words, song lyrics---on floppy discs (!) and an external ZIP drive.

In 2002 I upgraded to a Dell, which worked ok until it crashed---totally---in 2007.

Whereupon I bought the iMac by which I now communicate to you. in the interim, I threw out the Mac Performa's big, clunky screen after I tried to boot up the machine and failed to get a picture. I'd replaced a battery in the monitor, once. But I just needed to get rid of all the comp. stuff collecting dust around the house.

A year ago, I brought the Mac Performa to Tek Serve here in Manhattan, to retrieve all data and preserve it on an external hard drive I now have.

The tech guy said they don't even have the cables available for my dinosaur.

Now, I need some of my old files.

I'm thinking it'd be more likely someone, somewhere in New York City, would have a rig that can accept my old floppies, or my bigger ZIP drives, and I can do it that way. Kinko's? Maybe Tek Serve again? (I should call 'em before I post this, but won't.)

Where to start??

Any experts care to weigh in?

Thanks...

I HEART MY iMAC
