Far from being hapless victims, the aftermath of hurricane Sandy has shown that America's ordinary folks are its most productive citizens. Police Officers, firefighters, National Guard Soldiers and other first responders saved untold lives. And in the aftermath of the storm, despite the incredible damage inflicted, infrastructure and essential services are being repaired at an incredible rate.
As we speak utility workers, public works employees, sanitation workers, truck drivers, heavy equipment operators and many others are working long hours in often dangerous and disagreeable conditions to rebuild the infrastructure we usually take for granted. And lets not forget all the FEMA personnel who have been working behind the scenes to make sure local agencies have the resources and money they need to cleanup and rebuild (no one appreciates an efficient clerk until you really need your check fast).
Its also interesting to note that many of the people who responded and are working to rebuild are the public servants certain people have spent so much time demonizing.
If anyone doubts how well we've been responding to this disaster I recommend they dig up old news stories relating to the responses to and rebuilding after disasters in other countries.
