...at a promotional screening in Vancouver, at the Paramount theatre.
First, some history... I liked the first M:I for what it was, I thought the second one was a colossal f*ck up (skating on the road next to the motorcycle? The Doves? what the hell is with John Woo and doves?!?) Plus, I have always been big Alias and Lost fans, so the work of J.J. Abrams is always something I watch out for.
This film is the equivalent of Batman Begins - Not only did it kick all kinds of assy goodness, but it effectively reboots the franchise. And most importantly, it wasn't just an Ethan Hunt flick! There was an actual IMF team this time around, and they were great.
Philip Seymour Hoffman should ALWAYS be a villain. First movie villian in a long time that actually felt evil. Not some megalomaniac Bond Villain who gives his life story to the hero just in time for the hero to stop them. He says nothing and he's always one step ahead (for those who don't like Cruise, you'll love this as he gets his ass handed to him on several occasions)
About halfway through there is a bridge set piece - you see it on the ads, when Tom gets knocked into the side of a car. That whole sequence makes the film worthwhile on it's own.
If you like spy flicks, go see it. Easily falls into the same category as Early Bond flicks and the Bourne Identity/Supremacy. Great time.
Oh, and I'm not sure why, but Pierce Brosnan was walking through the theatre right before we went in. You can tell why he was picked to be a Bond - the man is good looking. Tall too.
Cheers!
