Classical music soothes travellers' frayed nerves
By Paul Marston, Transport Correspondent 12:01AM GMT 31 Oct 2002
Classical music will reverberate round some of the country's busiest bus stations after the discovery that it relieved the troubled brows of impatient passengers and potential criminals.
A six-month trial conducted by London Buses at one of its least prepossessing stations found that the melodies led to more contentment among waiting travellers and less vandalism and graffiti.
Pieces by Handel, Mozart, Grieg, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky and Vivaldi were played from the early morning until after the last buses departed late at night.
At the end of the test period, more than 80 per cent of travellers at West Croydon, approved. Almost a quarter expressed the view that it made them feel safer, especially after dark.
Staff at the station, which is used by more than three million passengers a year, reported that its "bad reputation" disappeared.===================
