With so many states and counties in fiscal dispair and struggling to make ends meet should we as a society look to shorten criminal sentencing? I look at prisons as a money trap. They are needed to keep the most harsh people off the streets and it is needed for the protection of society. However do so many people need to be in prison.

Have we used prisons as a cruch to make ourselves forget the woes of are society?

Are sentences to harsh?

What purpose other then incapatation do they serve? Rehabilatation? Deterrance? Or good old fashion retribution?

What curious to see what your thoughts are on the subject.
