Kelly Folsom,
I started working with the Dept of Sanitation a while back and am fully enjoying the benefits of waste in as much as being able to take home nice things that wasteful people throw out in their trash. Last week I found a Sony Vaio that once home booted up fine, however I don't have a copy of the Windows XP to format the drive and it is not only password protected at login, it won't let me boot into safe mode to alter the login, nor go through the CMOS as it is also password protected and locks down after 3 failed attempts.

I need to buy a code cracker to defeat and reset the login access, but I am not sure which one is decent for around 20$, as I don't want to spend a fortune to discover that there was a hardware reason for the disposal of the computer and it is only good as a paperweight.

Another thing I've wondered is that if I can get ahold of an XP recovery disk set do I have to get one for the Sony Vaio or will one from Emachines work just as well? Is the recovery disk different from the Bootable disks that you burn as part of the Windows XP recovery application built in, and can anyone tell me how to boot into Safe Mode when F8 at boot doesn't work to do so?
The last thing about this is that the previous owners removed the Login as a Guest so I can't use that as a backdoor either.
