OK, so I heard the most moronic bit of PC nonsense about Swine Flu on the news tonight!
Some Muslim extremists are livid over the name of the disease and consider in an insult to Islam and they insist it should be renamed "Mexican Flu". If this isn't the stupidest thing I have ever heard, I don't know what is.

Swine influenza has it's name because the Orthomyxoviridae family of the flu virus is endemic to pig populations. It is a zoonotic virus, one that originates in an animal population and can be transmitted to humans, exactly like Bird Flu, Dog Flu and Horse Flu. There are three current strain subtypes circulating through humans: H1N1, H1N2 and H3N2. (Bird flu is H5N1) The disease has been around for centuries, the 1918 flu pandemic in humans was associated with the H1N1 strain, and may reflect a zoonosis either from swine to humans or vice versa. Flu is dangerous because the different types can change and reassort themselves and can then become resistant to vaccines and drugs. Flu is transmitted through coughing and sneezing, or by touching items contaminated by others. Swine Flu is NOT transmitted by eating pork because flu is NOT transmitted through food.

I don't understand how the minds of some of these extremist people work. It's a disease, not a personal attack on their skewed version of their religion. Get over it already.
