t-shirt size frustration

Why is it that there seems to be no standardization of t-shirt sizes between brands? The shirt in the pics is an XL, which normally fits just fine. This is a Quicksilver shirt. Then, I actually have a large Volcom shirt that fits better than this one. I wouldn't wear it out, but at least it mostly covers my gut. Weird.
