We treat teachers like shit -- undermine their job security and pensions (formerly some of the few perks of the job) -- and surprise fewer people want to be or stay teachers.

What a lot of people don't seem to understand is that being able to hire and keep good teachers is at least as important as being able to fire bad ones. Indeed if you treat teachers like shit the good ones will be the first to leave (they have other options).
