Last Sunday, I had an abcess form pretty much out of nowhere on the inside of my right leg, just above the knee. It was red, tight, and over 8 inches at its widest part. After much persuasion from some fellow Dimsters, I went to see the doc Monday afternoon. The diagnosis was cellulitis due to a spider bite. The doc gave me some antibiotics scheduled me for a follow up the next afternoon.

It was worse the next day, the infection moving from the original abcess both up and down my leg. I also developed a headache, nausea, and a fever. I was admitted to the hospital that afternoon. I was started on IV antibiotics and taken to surgery on Wednesday, where they remove infected tissue and drained fluid from the area. The cultures came back MRSA, a VERY serious staph infection that left untreated would have likely resulted in me having my leg amputated.

I am finally home as of today. I have a very deep wound in my leg where the surgery was performed that is going to require quite a bit a care for a while but given the alternative i'll take it.

Now the cause for the cellulitis WAS NOT a spider bite as first thought. The cause was my shorts ( not my undies BTW :p ). It seems as though friction from the hem of my shorts (I wear them all year long here) caused a microscopic abrasion that allowed the bacteria to enter my body. Crazy, eh?

Thanks to everyone who kept me in there thoughts. It is most appreciated.

Rick
