There are a lot of games being played regarding the fiscal cliff by both parties. IMO right now the republicans are being outflanked in the game of fiscal chicken. they can't let the tax rates rise or cut off unemployment benefits without suffering a lot of political damage.
i doubt after making such a deal that they will ever see the kinds of cuts to benefits that they want. right after this impending catastrophe we'll move to the debt ceiling issue. if the republicans block without laying a real plan on the table again i think americans are going to be furious and they won't be able to live this down before the midterms.
