I am sure some of the geeks among us have seen the previews of the new Star Trek film out next year, initially a shot of the crew and this weekend, a preview of the new (or old, depending on your reference) U.S.S. Enterprise. I was mainly curious as to what the Trekkers among us think of this new "re-imagining".

I for one was brought to Kirk and Co. initially from reruns in my youth and obviously the movies; I remember offhand about 2 dozen episodes I had seen here and there, but only got back into the fandom aspect with Next Generation, circa 1986. My overall thoughts on the new movie:

As an actor considering this movie, it has to be what you would consider a thankless task. Scores of hardcore fans will scrutinize your every move and call you on it, casual people will just laugh at your silly hairdos. The horny dudes just want to see Uhura naked. Gay men want that thinly veiled sense of eros from Kirk and Spock. It's a cornucopia of people to please and risk pissing off everyone.

I for one do not mind Sylar (Zach Quinto) being cast as Spock. With their carefully-repressed emotions, Vulcans always struck me as a woefully unpredictable species, and the actor brings enough of that duality to the screen where he can be serene one moment and the next be all koon-ut-kal-if-fee on your ass.

James T. Kirk, NCC-90210. 'Nuff said. I wonder if he will be able to hear the director over the sound of how awesome he is.

Éomer as Bones? What happened to the freakin' locks of hair, man? Ahead dork factor 6, Doctor Dutchboy.

Simon Pegg as Scotty will work, because the actor is just that goddamn good.

Harold (but not Kumar) goes to Starfleet Academy? Good actor, hard past to get over though. I wonder if the 23rd century has some killer bud.

Zoe Saldana as Uhura. Futuristic funkalicious chocolate love, baby. Plus she has a smart look to her that will pull the part off, since Uhura was really a cryptography genius as far as her backstory went.

Generic Russian dude. Chekov was always a token character to me, thrown in to satisfy the Russians with an immature, whiney, egotistical character. I don't need to see another actor try and channel Walter Koenig.

The really shitty Bruce Banner as the bad guy. Someone apparently played Baldur's Gate II and thought Jon Irenicus would make a good look for a bad guy. Tattooed Wizards of Thay (see below) also come to mind if you're a D&D player. I tire of Romulans as villains, but the timeframe of the movie suggests they are still relevant.

The Big-E...tough call. It's really the centerpiece of the show, imho. This one is too smooth. Too Next-Gen-y. It's a cross between the Enterprise-C, the NSEA Protector, and a 1957 Chevy. All I ask is to give it some firepower and make the Romulan Warbirds look less dorky.

Overall, I'm not making any snap judgments as of yet, despite my thoughts about certain characters.
