A while back, Sandie and I bought three tomato plants at our local Wal-Mart, and put them in a large pot on our front porch - where Beau our puppy couldn't eat them:

We got a few blossoms, and then eight little green tomatoes. We thought they didn't have enough room in the single pot, so last week I bought two more pots and put each plant in its own pot:

Most of the tomatoes stayed green, even after I transplanted them and gave them plenty of plant food:

But one started turning red a few days ago. I checked it at lunchtime today - it was still a bit hard, so I kept it on the vine.

Tonight, Sandie looked out the window and noticed a blue jay flying away from where out tomato plants were. So I went outside and saw that the bird had eaten most of the only ripe tomato we had:

Right now, I don't think the other tomatoes will mature any more, because the plants were root-bound for too long. So we'll probably get some more plants this weekend and try again.

(Our next-door neighbor has a garden and he has been giving us some great produce - potatoes, onions, and a HUGE zucchini that was delicious. He told me the other day that his tomatoes are almost ready, and he'll bring some over when they're ready. So I think we still have time to grow our own tomatoes this year....)
