Just wondering if anyone has run into this problem. In Maine, not wearing your seatbelt is now a primary offense--meaning, you can be stopped for that reason, and that reason alone (it used to be secondary, meaning, they could only give you a ticket for it if they stopped you for another reason and found you sans seatbelt).
My old car had seatbelts that JUST fit me. My new car, although the same make, is a different year--and I just cannot get the seatbelt around me without a lot of wiggling, bellylifting, and holding my breath. If I do get it on, it restricts my movement to a degree that it restricts my ability to drive safely. I realize I can get an extender, and plan to check with the manufacturer regarding the same, but I've run into the same problem as a passenger in other cars.
So, my question for any police officers or other fatties with the experience of being stopped without a seatbelt is this: if I physically unable to wear the seatbelt, is it still a ticket-able offense not to be wearing it, whether driver or passenger?
Thanks!
