The US deficit predicament is really simple: In order to get elected, one party is promising entitlement programs that supporters of the other party are unwilling to pay for.

Getting free stuff is attractive, so the party that promises free stuff often gets its way. But the money isn't there to pay for the promised free stuff. So debt is issued. Eventually that will end badly.

Lower taxes and less government is also attractive, and so the other party also often gets its way. But then there is even less money for all the existing entitlement programs, and so debt is issued. Eventually that will end badly, too.

Sooo….

For those who view entitlement programs acceptable and are willing to overlook the "you get free stuff if you vote for us" approach, how do you make it all work?

For those who want to cut down government and entitlement programs and are willing to overlook the "you get to keep your money if you vote for us" approach, how do you wean all those many millions who've come to depend on them off it?
