I don't post very much on Dimensions because I am afraid of needing validation--even with my clothes on.

This comment was made in Donnalicious' thread, and brings forth a question I've long had in my mind. Why do we need to be afraid of needing validation? Is it such a bad thing to want other people to tell us that we're okay, beautiful, smart, etc? Isn't that part of our basic human instincts, to be accepted by others? It's one thing if our self esteem is based solely on the opinions of others, but, as one who has felt the fear that Janet speaks of...that of staying in the shadows for fear of seeming "needy"...this is something I've often pondered, and would love to hear other's thoughts. Does wanting someone to tell us that we're okay in some way signify a weakness on our part? Why do so many people feel guilty about this?

I realize these questions seem simplistic, and the answers are fairly obvious, but I'd really like to get some dialogue going about this issue and know what other people think about it.
