I know there's this other thread about the new Star Trek movie: http://www.dimensionsmagazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58638
but so not to spoil it for people who haven't seen it it yet, I've opened this thread. If you're yet going to see it and want an un-biased experience, don't read on. this is for people who've seen it and want to discuss it.
Here's my 2c:
First, the movie was GREAT. Far better than expected. However ...
The Romulan ship looks like a porcupine, Spock's vessel reminds me of a kitchen appliance. And this when Romulans used to have pretty stylish ships.
Of course, great special effects, but the "beaming"-effect seems to be taken from Jazz trombonist Josh Roseman's CD cover: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/618JRtQclzL._SS500_.jpg . The former effects were way cooler.
the planet close to Vulcan where old Spock and Kirk were marooned must not have been formed by evolution, but rather some (un-) intelligent design. Why would there be bright red, Lobster-like creatures in an Arctic environment?
And also, timeshifting always boggles my mind. Where did the Romulan dude hide in the approx. 25 years between Kirk's birth and the encounter with the Enterprise. I know, old Spock explained it in the ice cave, but I#ve seen the un-dubbed version, so I didn't get 100% of the dialogues. And weren't there 2 Spocks in the ending? Or how did old Spock get back to the future?
