Dutch Hugaholic Treat
Whenever a lottery becomes so big that it reaches the news, one of my favorite things to do is play the What If You Won the Lottery with my friends and family. We fantasize about becoming philantropists, decide who, among our relatives and friends, to share our good fortune with, then, decide how to spend our loot because if we bought a ticket, we could win!!
If I actually won, I wouldn't tell anyone. I'd set up a blind trust and put myself on a budget so I would have money until the day I die. I'd be happy with a modest log cabin on a lake in Maine for the summer and a modest house on the ocean some place warm for the winter and a home near the water in the Netherlands. (Love the water!!) I'd donate to the ASPCA and The Christian Children's Fund. Probably buy a new Honda. I'm happy with costume jewelry: silver and semi precious stones. Don't feel the need for major bling, except an engagement ring. I'd set up trust funds to pay for my nieces and nephew 's college tuition. One of my favorite ideas is to give anonymous presents like trips to friends. (I read that one lottery winner does this.) I'd love to travel the world with my true love and take classes from cooking to philosophy to tai chi. Oh! Oh! I'd also be able to afford those gorgeous Peg Lutz dresses! And I could pay mega bucks to have a professional do my hair. However, in the end, trite as it may sound, given a choice between my soul-mate and lottery winnings, I'd pick my soul-mate. I'd rather feel loved than be lonely with lots of money. Ideally, I would have both, but given the choice....
What would you do? Would your worry about The Curse of the lottery? Do you think winning it would change you?
