Having gone through a bad marriage and a good divorce, and now happily being the only adult in my home, I consider myself 'single'.

However, I've been dating a truly wonderful man for 5 years now and we are monogamous, but happily living in our own homes. We discuss combining those homes now and then, but always come to the same conclusion--we quite like the way things are, we're very happy, and neither of us is eager to move or feels as though we need to be living together to 'prove' our commitment. He, too, (for the record) also went through a bad marriage and divorce.

The reason for my question is that people sometimes argue with me over my definition of myself as 'single'. They say that being in a relationship makes me NOT single. I say that living alone, unmarried, not engaged, not even remotely interested in being married, makes me 'single'. The government, from all the forms I've seen, seems to agree with me, since there isn't a check box for "unmarried, not living together, but in a relationship that seems pretty good so far" insofaras I've ever seen.

So, I wonder....how do YOU define single?
