Recently one of my family members blew up over a stupid thing and started shouting at my mom, so I sort of stepped in and asked him to show more respect. What's interesting is that I come from a fat family-- not a skinny one in the bunch-- but am the only FA. I've noticed that all the self-hating fat people are MUCH quicker to trot out "fat" as an insult than even the meanest skinny person.
For me, it lacks bite. You can call me a "fat" anything and it means nothing. It's like "stupid," to me-- more a generic negative than anything that stings. I'd react much more emotionally to "spoiled," or "useless" or another insult that seemed more personalized. "Fat" has been overused so much I ignore it... and it's usually more about the shouter than the shoutee.
But I've noticed that when a fat person calls another person "fat" in anger, they seem to say it with more passion and disgust than non-fat people. It's almost as if their own lack of self worth, their innermost and greatest fear, comes to mind in that moment as the worst thing they could say about another person. Which always completely deflates the intention... because all I can think when they do it is "man, do you hate yourself!"
Anyone else have thoughts?
