Quick, name the character Halle Berry played in her Oscar-winning performance in "Monster's Ball"? What was Denzel's onscreen name for his award winning turn in "Traning Day"? Do you remember Whoopi's or Hilary Swank's or any Oscar winning actor's character's moniker? Chances are you're scratching your head trying to remember.

Effie White is a name we can't forget. Jennifer Holiday won an Tony playing the zatig singer Effie White in the Broadway version of Dreamgirls. Betrayed by her lover, her brother and her friends, Effie had the last laugh when she went on to achieve success doing it her way despite the heartache and the rejection.

Oddsmakers say in two weeks, Jennifer Hudson, who debuted as Effie White in the cinematic version of Dreamgirls, will win the Oscar for best supporting actress for her poignant, yet fierce portrayal of Effie WHite.

Why do we love Effie so much? Because all of us have had the rug pulled from under us and hit rock bottom. Some like Effie White lick our emotional wounds, and go on to live out our dreams. Others, get kicked to the curb and never get up again. We love Effie because she is the essence of pain and renewal, hope lost and holding on to hope. With Effie White we are reminded that two laws of the universe are timeless on screen and in real life; what goes around comes around and living well is the best revenge.
