In 1962 the province of Saskatchewan launched a single payer medicare system. The tiny (population wise) province withstood fierce opposition from entrenched interests. However, the single payer system quickly gained support. So much so that just four years later, in 1966, Canada's federal government enacted a nation wide single payer system based on the Saskatchewan model. A system that continues to cover all Canadians.

Now, 49 years after Saskatchewan implemented its ground breaking plan, the small state of Vermont appears to be following suit. Given that regardless of its constitutionality President Obama's healthcare reform is doomed to fail it looks like it will be up to states like Vermont who actually care about their citizens to enact real healthcare reform.

Vermont's plan seems to follow the Canadian model.

I'm sure that the insurance industry will fight Vermont to the bitter end. Lets hope Vermont can stand firm.
