Hi everyone. My name is Maggie. As my alias states, I am a graduate student. I study Communications at the University of Pennsylvania. For the past year, I have been studying issues of fat in our culture. I did a study of Weight Watchers as well as a study looking at fat women and beauty culture. This semester, I am interested in continuing to look at the ways in which fat people are made invisible in our culture, and the ways in which that is challenged. Of course, in looking at the latter, I found your site! Ive been a lurker, I admit, for months, just out of personal interest (I am a big woman myself).
I am taking a course this semester on ethnography, learning to talk with people to see how they use media to make meaning and form community. I would be extremely interested in talking to some of the men who participate in the Dimensions forums. Im really looking forward to getting to know the women in this community as well, but for the more narrow purpose of a term paper, I think Id really like to focus on talking with the guys who identify as Fat Admirers. It would take the form of completely anonymous, confidential interviews (in compliance with strict academic standards) with whoever is willing to speak with me about how you use the content on the site, and generally what it means to be Fat Admirers. Im approaching all of this, as I hope is clear, with the utmost respect for all of you and your privacy. Id be very grateful for your time!
