Look at your immediate surroundings and see what catches your eye . . .

The desk is overrun with stuff. Maria cleared it this morning while I was at the post office, but it is full again already. A blue-tinged Dasani water bottle next to the Suave Cucumber Melon lotion – lined up in height order as if I meant it to be that way. The dark blue watter bottle cap, next to the empty Midol bottle – just took the last two for bloating and cramps. My feet feel swollen for the first time in many months. Not sure why they didn’t make it into the garbage can.

I-pod headphones on top of the letter from the IRS telling me that I owe them money and the notes from the call I made to them a few hours earlier committing to pay a king's ransom every month. And under that more publications telling me all the things they can do to make my life miserable if I don’t pay up to Uncle Sam. My calendar leans against a stack of invitations I need to mail for a client event. A black solar calculator rests on top, where I left it after figuring out bank balances and dollars made and owed. That is just the 18 inches to my left.

And on the right? The July 2, 2007 New Yorker, green, with the Statue of Liberty on the cover. New Yorker lies on top of Prevention magazine, the monthly selection from One Spirit book club and cross stitch cloth for the latest project I received in the mail. You 24 magazine (don’t even know what that is or why I got it) on top of the Autism Society of America monthly on top of information about the Hay House I CAN DO IT conference to be held at sea. And under that? A clip board holding a yellow pad where I list the day's tasks and schedule.

The bottle of Wellbutrin lays on top of Bukowski’s Factotum. Matt Dillon on the cover of this new edition. He is no Bukowski. Pieces of my life, spread in disarray across my desk. Content.
