While much of the country is under snow California is suffering an unprecedented drought. California's central valley is taking the biggest hit. Allocations of irrigation water have been slashed -- pastures are brown when they should be their greenest -- fields are fallow -- orchards are being abandoned -- cattle herds culled. All this portends serious suffering for all the workers dependent upon agriculture -- and these are people who are far from rich even in the best of times.
