For a while now I've been wondering if I should upgrade to the latest version of vBulletin. So I want to tell you a bit about what is involved, what can happen, etc.
First of all, we're now at rev 3.6.8. After that came version 3.7 that offered better spam management, user picture galleries, user-created social groups, etc. Then came 3.8 that extended the social group and private messaging functions. Each time there are numerous sub-versions.
I didn't upgrade from our current 3.6.8 for the following reasons:
1) It works.
2) I am not sure we need social group/networking functions since we already have a lot of forums and sub-forums.
3) Upgrading can be a pain (almost everything customized needs to be hand-customized again)
So at this point I am a bit undecided. I don't like to fall too far behind with software versions, but this one still seems within shouting distance of the latest, and it works.
Oh, and another thing is that vBulletin allows plug-ins and add-ons. About half the cool functionality on our forums comes via plug-ins that I installed.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know.
