it's only me

i have a 9 yr old chow & he has terrible allergies, his ears are almost swollen shut now but he refuse to let anyone put drops in his them, when ever we take him to his appointments, in order for the vet to clean his ears he has to put him to sleep for a while. his ears are so bad at times, sometimes they have a terrible smell.
we've tried everything, we've changed his diet(grain free), but we still have to put up with the noise of him licking his paws EVERY nite, it's annoying at times we barely can get any sleep, (he sleeps in our room under the nightstand).
but the vet says there's nothing that can be done even after we've changed his diet, he said some dogs just have allergies & some don't, & for us to just give him benadryl, i seriously hate drugging my baby every other nite but it's the only way for him to get relief & us to get a little peace & quiet from the licking, if it's not his diet then what else can it be, i told my husband it has to be 1 of 2 things or maybe both- the carpet or grass.
does anyone else have the same problems?, any advice will help.
