The recent gorgeous picture of Beth Ditto on Love magazine inspired me to create this new thread.
Beth Ditto and Adele are the only two singers in the public eye in the UK over a UK size 12. I think it's always been like that and here lies the double standard. It's ok for male actors and pop stars to be fat, ugly, handsome, skinny, average, doesn't matter. I'm not saying there is no pressure for BHM's and society doesn't bring men the same judgements and mockery but with regards to the entertainment industry no-one ever let's a woman's tallent be enough.
I mean, You'd get a photo of Elton John on the cover of a magazine with a swollen tummy and wearing a bad wig with no comment and then a picture of the latest skinny girl band with a comment about her cellulite. I've seen interviews with said pop princesses being told to lose weight, who ever told Meatloaf to go on a diet and why should they, he was sexy.
When I was younger there was Alison Moyet from Yazoo and Karen Wheeler from Soul to Soul and chaka Khan, they were big beautiful woman but they were and still are a minority. Then we had the discovery of a new plus sized supermodel Sophie Dhal, this showed promise and hope that there might be room for bigger models to be seen at 'London fashion week' of course she went skinny and now just looks weird. Where are the rest of the big beautiful women Icons, who is the new Diana Doors? For those non UK folk who may not have heard of her, she was a voluptious and very sexy British actress who has sadly passed away. She is in the 'Adam and the Ants' video of the pop song 'Prince charming' I'm sure this can be found on UTube, she comes in at the end as the fairy god mother. She was in her latter years when she made this and was a gorgeous film star in her younger years (although not as big still curvy).
The exception to the rule seems to be large women comedians because of course fat is funny!!! Then if a comedienne goes into acting she might get a more serious role, Kathy Burke, Pauline Quirk etc but they wouldn't be cast in the lead romantic role or lead any other role until there was an emphasis on fat or fat being part of the story line (like the truth about cats & dogs...yawn). Queen Latifa had a sort of lead role in a movie with Steve Martin but still not the real deal and she is not that big either. Why are there no BBW's of the entertainment world? If there are then who are they? Has a fat person ever won an academy award or an Oscar?
This is why we have a society that is so screwed up about image and the body beautiful, we are allowing the media to get away with it every time we buy a magazine with a skinny woman on the front cover. I'm not saying we need to sack all the skinny actresses and pop stars but we need to kick up more of s stink with clothing companies that they don't carry our size and they are discriminating against big women. Why should I have to go into a specialist store like Evans in order to buy clothes? Every time I have to do this I am aware that I am not in a 'normal sized' persons shop. Is my money not good enough for Dorothy Perkins or Selfridges? Is it too fat?
