Since he was a teenager Russell Williams has been active in fighting discrimination. In the early 60s he joined the Congress of Racial Equality. It was during this time that he was trained in the techniques of nonviolent passive resistance. During this time he also attended the 1963 March on Washington and participated in the other demonstrations against racial discrimination. In 1976 he joined the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance and for 12 years was a member of its national board of directors. He is a vice president of the International Size Acceptance Association, the author of the Declaration of Fat Independence, and has frequently spoken and written about size acceptance issues. He is chairperson of his churchs social concerns committee and a vice president of the local NAACP.
