I got to thinking about all of the things I treasure, other than the obvious....photos and family items, and it got me wondering how others would respond to the question...What do you have that you value above most other things, other than photos and such?
For me, the answer is something that I was again reminded of last night. I was going through a drawer and found a collection of letters and poems spanning a 23 year friendship with my high school writing/english teacher. I spent several emotional hours last night reading through them again, reliving many memories, remembering why I value his friendship so much. He has always been one of the few people who really "get" me, as well as someone who shares my love of the well-written word. He has been one of the few people in my life who has been a consistent source of encouragement, and always willing to kick me in the pants without condemnation when I need it. I've always valued these letters, but reading them again last night after several years of letting them lie has made me realize how special they are.
