Be prepared for another rant here.....
Health has always been one my main concern, for myself and for others that are large or supersized. It is true that when encountering those in the medical field we sometimes have to fight to have them address our real health concern and not just give us the "weight/diet" speech.
Also, sometimes the medical equipment needed for proper diagnosis and treatment are not for large or supersize patients and it can be frustrating.
Recently I was scheduled to have an MRI and the one at the doctor's office went only up to 350 pounds so I was sent to an open MRI. My own doctor was shocked to find out that when I went to get the open MRI....I did not fit into the machine and could not have it done. The worst part was the MRI technician was condecending and very unkind about the situation.
As strong an advocate as I try to be for others discriminated against (I have been active in the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance for the over 20years!)....this was the first time that my personal journey struck such a painful place. I must admit I was near tears and feeling very powerless.
Once I got over the emotion, I got mad and complained about my treatment from the technician. My only alternative is to go to another city about four hours away and MAYBE I will fit under this special machine....<sigh> My surgeon is willing to do shoulder surgery with just my xrays, but I am uncertain if I even want to have it done. It will be riskier and longer and I just do not know.
So, you see, even though we have come a long way in the size acceptance movement.......we all STILL have to deal with situations that are challenging and sometimes frustrating.
I guess we must keep up the good fight!
Hugs, Kara
