I think I finally found the problem that's been dragging down server performance over the past year or so. The forums should operate MUCH faster now, especially the loading of pages.
Whew. That was a tough one. Goes to show that sometimes you can spend a huge amount of time on some vexing computer problem, try any trick, ask anyone who might be able to help, and nada. Then, all of a sudden, you see the fix.
