So this idea came out of a Main Board thread about a SSBBW bad experience with online dating, and an ensuing discussion made it clear a lot of us have had experiences with it, ranging from good to laughable.
So, let's share online dating tales and ideas and observations. Did you have a good or terrible experience with a date? Feel like the site was misleading or downright dishonest? Encounter some crazies online?
I also thought this would be a good place to discuss online dating netiquette. There was a discussion in the Letters thread about whether or not to respond to winks/flirts/IM's from somebody where you are not interested. My personal take on this is no. I ignore somebody if i'm not interested and expect the same in return. I don't need to know why they are not interested, nor would i feel polite or respectful telling a man why i was not interested in communicating with him.
Probably my funniest experience had nothing to do with a date. I signed up for a short term subscription just to go out a bit. I'd just moved and gone through a bad breakup. The day before my subscription was up, I got an email from what had to be the fakest online profile in history. I'd mentioned my interests in target shooting and wine, and.....this dude just happend to have both a gun collection and a wine cellar with wines that cost up to $1000/case. All of this enjoyed in between racing cars and life after retirement as CEO of a large company, and playing with his 3 labrador retrievers. LOL. Ok, dating site managers, I understand wanting subscribers to re-up, but when you're that transparent, it makes me want nothing to do with you.
