Lions don't need to spank
As people cleanup, regroup, and recover from Sandy's rampage another thing we can do is start planning for the future. I realize some people in the badly damaged areas of Staten Island & Jersey Shore really do not have time to do anything but try and get some of their life back. However, others can use what we are living and watching to make a plan for coping with future disasters.
In my state of Arkansas, our two main disasters of this type are tornado damage in the summer and ice storm damage in the winter. An ice storm has left my family without power for over a week during the coldest time of winter. It also has iced over all the roads so that we cannot leave our home during this week until the roads are cleared of downed power lines, broken trees, and wrecked cars.
So I try to keep a week's worth of necessarys in the winter and a similar stock in the summer in case of a disaster. Here's my short list. I ecourage other DIMMERS to post a list that they would (or do) stockpile for their family in case of a disaster (List for 2 adults & 2 dogs.)
Disaster Supplies
Flashlights with replacement batteries
Battery or crank powered radio
First aid kit w/ drinking alcohol, rubbing alcohol, neosporin, steri strips, bleach, antiseptic wipes
Extra personal medication for one week, aspirin, pepto bismol
Drinkable water in gallon plastic jugs for people - 5 gallons
(Dogs can drink melted snow or ice) from outside
Way to heat water - we would use our outdoor, gas grill
Way to cook food - we also have a coleman, portable outdoor stove
Matches, electric lighter, fuel for coleman stove
Additives to mix with water
Buttermilk powder, mix for hot chocolate
Tang or orange drink mix, grape drink mix
5 lb sack of sugar, box of 100 Splenda packs
Box of tea for brewing
Food - Canned Spam, vienna sausages, canned tuna, canned chicken
dried noodles, instant rice, grits, oatmeal, assorted dried & canned beans
packages of spagetti sauce mix, canned tomato sauce & tomato paste, Canned and dry fruit of choice, peanut butter, olive oil, beef jerky
Dry dogfood
If there's anything you can't live without - it may need to be in your emergency pack too. An example might be a spare pair of eye glasses, or a muzzle and leash for your dog.
