Pretty much anyone who uses anything that runs software will sooner or later face the inevitable question: should I update? Sometimes updates happen automatically, sometimes they pile up and sort of nag you, like Windows or the apps on an iPhone, but sometimes the decision is all yours: should you leave what you know and what works behind and install the latest version? At times you have to as there are new features that you need, or everyone else uses the new version and you can't be left behind. But updating also means having to get used to a lot of news stuff, spending a lot of time learning it all, and perhaps the update really isn't much of an improvement.
This is the question I am facing with the vBulletin software that is at the center of the Dimensions community. When I first switched us to vBulletin back in 2005 or so, I used the then brand-new version 3.0. In the meantime, there's been numerous minor upgrades and customizations,, and we're at 3.6.8 or 3.7.2 (vBulletin does not seem totally sure). Everything works remarkably well (touch wood!), but vBulletin has moved on and is now at version 4.18.
Now I realize that those version numbers mean nothing to some of you, but others may frequent other vBulletin installations at different version levels. It'd be interesting to hear from you, especially if you are familiar with boards that run version 4.x, which was a major upgrade. Initial reports on 4.x were not very good, but that was a year or two ago.
I already paid for all the upgrades, so we can upgrade anytime, but I really don't want to mess with a good thing unless it'd be a definite improvement.
