Last week I had some surgery. While being prepped the nurse put one of these clamp thingies on my finger to measure my oxygen levels. It was somewhere in the upper 90s. After a while I noticed it went down to the upper 80s when I became really relaxed. Just for shits and giggles I started to slowly sing this aria I knew and saw immediately the number begin to rise. In no time at all it was at 100 and I was hardly belting the tune.
This had me recall a lot of hoopla being made around the music circuit years ago about a study that boasts singing can improve health. I don't even think one has to be good at it to receive the benefits. I wondered if maybe this information can be used in some way to enhance efforts at strengthening health. Some studies have come out suggesting that singing can strengthen the immune system and people are now encouraging the elderly to participate in music and the arts. While there is a lot of controvercy on the direct link between health and singing I personally saw something with my own eyes that makes me want to take a closer look. I'm wondering if even deep breathing exercises can be of equal help.
