Haven't been to many weddings in the last few years, and the most recent ones were either with big gifts discouraged or we were part of a joint gift.
Now we are heading off to a pretty formal wedding (service at a catholic cathedral, dinner and dance at a high-end hotel). My wife and I are both going. The groom has been a friend of mine for over twenty years, part of a group of friends. He's forty, the bride is in her late thirties, they bought a house together a few years ago. They do have a small gift registry, but have indicated that what they would like most is money to go towards house renovations.
When my wife and I talked about what would be an appropriate amount to give, what she had in mind was double of what I had in mind. We each had our reasoning. Most likely we'll compromise somewhere in the middle, but I thought I'd do a bit of polling here first.
In this situation, how much would you think was an appropriate gift?
