Taking a US roadtrip.

Hey guys. My husband and I have plans to go to the US in 2 years. (For those who are not aware we're Aussies). We plan to spend 3 - 6 months roadtripping around the US and into Canada. We will arrive in LA Just before Halloween. What I was wondering is if Anyone had tips on good places to visit, restaurants to eat at, places to see. Also. If we can, we'd like to save money couchsurfing. If you don't mind housing 2 Aussies a night or 2, let me know.
